Purple Shelves Literary Services Acquires Rights to Publish Obinna Udenwe’s Years of Shame
Purple Shelves Literary Services is thrilled to announce the acquisition of publishing rights for Obinna Udenwe’s latest novel, Years of Shame. This gripping and deeply evocative narrative cements Udenwe’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most compelling literary voices. It explores themes of power, culture, and the tragic consequences of human choices.

In the words of the author; I am delighted for the acquisition of my new manuscript, Years of Shame by Purple Shelves Literary Services. I have known the incredible people behind this publishing firm for a long time. I know their credibility, the integrity they bring on board, their hard work, and the promises they hold for the African publishing and literary industry. Years of Shame is one book of mine I am indeed most excited about. This is because it not only explores the cultures and traditions of my people, the Abakaliki but also draws attention to the Arochukwu hegemony in the Igbo hinterlands and how their influence shaped identity formation in the areas where their hegemony and powers extended. The acquisition, which might be the richest book acquisition by a Nigerian publisher in recent times, is an indication of the love Purple Shelves has for this manuscript and the prospects it holds. Their love is unequaled by that of any publisher who had read and wanted to acquire this book and this makes it the more exciting.”
We at Purple Shelves are delighted about this publication and cannot wait for you all to meet Patrice Ikebe and all the other intriguing characters of Years of Shame.
About the Book
Set in southern Nigeria, Years of Shame tells the haunting tale of Patrice Ikebe, a man whose defiance and misplaced pride lead him to take the ukpa ji-ukpa nwa, a feared ritual oath of loss of wealth and children. The novel unravels the devastating ripple effects of this decision, spanning generations and culminating in a heart-wrenching reckoning for his descendants. With brilliant storytelling and unforgettable characters, Udenwe crafts a moving exploration of shame, loss, and the unrelenting grip of tradition.
